Fluttershy is frequently pushed beyond her boundaries throughout the series. Whether that be by her friends or enemies she always seems to find a way to reach new heights and feats that no one had ever thought possible. The sacrifices she makes for her friends give us an idea of how generous and kind her heart really is.
Indeed Fluttershy is my favorite character. She's got something that the others don't: An inner strength that surfaces only in respond to a need, not a desire. But knowing she has this strength frightens her.  I believe the reason she is always so quiet and tends to avoid confrontation isn't simply because she is shy and scared of her surroundings. But because she is much more afraid of herself than anything or anyone around her. Let me explain.
Fluttershy in her comfort zone is a kind and thoughtful pony. It takes quite a big push for her to move out of that comfort zone. But when she does, she becomes a force to be reckoned with. It's in this state that she loses control and might do something that she will regret. This is what frightens her more than anything. The emotional/physical damage she is capable of doing to others is far greater than any foe is capable of. To quote one of my favorite villains of all time, "It's always the quiet ones, isn't it?"
I gotta give credit to the mastermind behind the Mane Six: Lauren Faust.
I feel that Faust was able to make the characters in FiM more relate-able  than any other children's cartoon before it. Once you get to know the strengths/flaws of each character, you can see the hidden humor and   . Of course all of the references are nice, but that's only if you know what they are referencing too :P. I even showed the show to my parents and to my surprise they actually enjoyed watching it. It's a shame Faust had to leave the show, but with what's come of Season 3 and what's to come in Season 4, I do believe she has left it in good HANDS.
