In many ways, I enjoy writing for solo piano the most. It may not be as flashy or attention-grabbing as other styles but I find it allows me to focus on composition, be more daring (though this in particular is relatively simple), and explore ideas more thoroughly. One problem is that piano pieces can take on any number of forms so it's easy to spread my ideas too thin. While writing this I got an idea: to possibly make composing nocturnes a (relatively) regular thing. For me, as a form it allows for greater interpretation than, say, a sonata would. I don't know if I'll end up sticking to this, but it would be nice to have some degree of consistency in place whenever I set out to write for piano. Plus, I find that I work better during night, so it seems only natural. Now, this particular piece doesn't follow the exact same format as many true nocturnes, but I'm invoking artistic license here because I think this structure suits the piece better. It also pays homage to one of my absolute favorite piano pieces. Can you guess which one? (Hint: it's not exactly obscure).
