The primary motivation behind this is the fact that many gameplay testers fail at tasks that aren't supposed to be difficult, such as walking up a slope. The hope is that providing key information and demonstrations at appropriate times will help rectify this. While I was at it I added a few more advanced hints that aren't strictly necessary. On the technical side these are simulations of recorded player inputs (not videos) in a mini-world that's running within the menu system, much like the credits and game over screens.
